New research published in Frontiers in Pediatrics suggests that children with language developmental delay have noticeably different gut bacteria compared to children developing language normally. While this connection is still being understood, it hints at something profound: a child's digestive health and their language development may be more closely linked than we realised.
What Did the Study Find?
Researchers in China compared the gut bacteria of 24 children with language developmental delay (average age 4 years) to 26 typically developing children of the same age. Using advanced DNA sequencing, they discovered that children with language delays were missing several types of bacteria that healthy children naturally had. Specifically, they lacked bacteria belonging to families like Mycobacteriaceae, Sphingobacteriaceae, and Sphingomonadaceae.
However—and this is important—the researchers couldn't identify one specific "problem" bacterium that caused the language delay. Instead, they found a pattern: an overall imbalance, or what scientists call "dysbiosis," in the gut microbiota of children with language challenges.
